WithinReach Bridge to Basics WSC

WithinReach AmeriCorps Members make a positive impact on the health of Washington communities by improving access to health care and local food programs. Our AmeriCorps members provide system navigation, outreach, and education at food banks, health fairs, community colleges, homeless encampments and more. We work with community members to find programs and resources that will help meet their basic needs and put them on the path towards self-sufficiency and holistic health. Even after all of the hype that surrounded health care reform, many Washingtonians do not understand the essential health care resources available or how to get them. Some who are newly enrolled in health insurance do not know how to start utilizing it to manage their health, access preventative care (often for the first time), and lead overall healthier lives. Our AmeriCorps members help navigate a complex system, ensure that all individuals know how to access their health care, and help clients become self-advocates when exploring their options. At WithinReach, we believe a well-fed family is a healthy family. That’s why we also work to provide outreach to food insecure families in King and Snohomish counties. Washington ranks 23rd in the nation for number of residents who experience hunger, and as many as one-in-five children live in a home in which putting food on the table is a challenge. AmeriCorps members provide underserved and culturally diverse individuals with knowledge and access to local food resources, including work with local programs to increase spending power at farmer’s markets and feed kids in and out of school. Through direct client engagement, education, and empowerment, you can make a huge impact on health disparities and food security in Washington. This AmeriCorps position is great for applicants interested in careers in public health, non-profits, social services, nutrition access, and the healthcare system. This position is contingent on funding.
