*MTCC Fort Peck Community College School to Careers

Fort Peck Community College (FPCC) is one of seven tribal community colleges in the state of Montana. The college is located on the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Reservation in the northeast corner of Montana (Roosevelt County). Poplar is home to the main campus of Fort Peck Community College and is demographically 71.4% Native American. 24.4% of residents of Roosevelt County live in poverty according to the U.S. Census Bureau, compared to a Montana average of 14.6%, and 98% of students qualify for free lunch. With a graduation rate of 39% in 2016, this rate is well under the 86% average Montana graduation rate. The VISTA serving with FPCC will help develop a partnership between the community college and the Poplar School District to assist and encourage at-risk Native American students in Roosevelt County, embedded in generational poverty, to graduate high school and purse a post-secondary degree. This dual-enrollment project will lead to greater academic engagement and result in declining rates of dropouts, improved high school retention and graduation rates, and matriculation into post-secondary education, which will fight generational poverty and high unemployment through education. The VISTA will help to build the capacity of FPCC by developing and leveraging career and postsecondary education programming. These programs will increase student interest to pursue further career exploration and develop skills needed for employability. Montanans who do not graduate from high school make an average of $7,000 less per year than people with a high school diploma according to the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Graduating from high school can be the first step in helping to alleviate poverty for low income tribal students.
