Troy Public Schools is a public K-12 school district located along the banks of the Kootenai River in the rugged mountains of northwest Montana. In our district we educate approximately 400 students in grades K-12. Students in grades 7-12 attend Troy High School and Junior High. Our mission is to empower students to develop responsibility, achieve academic excellence, and succeed as lifelong learners. The Troy/Libby area once had two major lumber mills employing over 1,000 people directly; currently, there are zero operating major lumber mills in the county. Unemployment rates have hovered between 10 to 20 percent in recent years which have been among the highest in the state of Montana (Montana Department of Labor and Industry, 2016). From 2010 to 2014, the number of people below poverty level in Lincoln County was 17.1% which is almost 1 out of every 5 people (2014 American Community Survey). The survey also showed that Lincoln County has one of the largest percentages of people with less than High School education at 17.8% and is ranked #2 in the state. This project will help alleviate poverty by increasing workplace skills and employment opportunities for high school students after they graduate. This project will also alleviate poverty by increasing college attendance to gain advanced career opportunities.

Member Duties : According to the 2014 American Community Survey, only 18.9% of Lincoln County residents achieve a college degree. 25.4% of Troy, MT residents live below poverty level. Troy High School aims to increase post-high school career opportunities to minimize the risk of students falling below poverty level after graduation. The school hopes to equip students with a post-high school plan so they are prepared to enter the workforce or postsecondary education. This VISTA project will increase opportunities for job shadowing/internships and college courses as means to better prepare students for supporting themselves after high school. The VISTA will collaborate with local businesses and design a program for job shadowing/internships; Collaborate with Flathead Valley Community College to investigate college courses students can take that align with their career interests; Increase parental involvement and education regarding postsecondary planning for students.
