* MTCC Sparrow's Nest of Northwest Montana

Sparrow’s Nest of Northwest Montana is an emerging organization in Flathead County, excited to work with our community to ensure our teens have a safe place to sleep at night. We envision our organization as a mechanism for empowering our homeless teens to graduate from high school and become productive, contributing members of our community. The need for safe housing for homeless youth was identified through the assessments and concerns of local community members. The number of unaccompanied homeless minors in Flathead County has grown in recent years and community members have voiced a concern with the increasing number of homeless high school students locally. According to the National Center for Homeless Education, 1.2 million public school children are homeless nationwide. There were 2,640 homeless students in Montana alone during the 2013-2014 school year. Research has found that 75 percent of homeless high school students drop out of school. The VISTA will play a role in reducing these numbers within the Flathead Valley. Unaccompanied homeless high school students who have a safe place to sleep at night will have higher educational outcomes and opportunities to continue higher education and a career. This project will alleviate poverty by helping identify and direct homeless youth to safe shelter and high school enrollment and additional services.

Member Duties : The VISTA serving with Sparrow's Nest will build upon the service of previous VISTAs by developing educational programs, continuing to ensure the sustainability of volunteer programs, networking with key stakeholders, and providing outreach to expand programs throughout Western Montana. The VISTA's service will help prepare unaccompanied homeless high school students grades 9-12 for college and careers. This will be accomplished by partnering with Flathead Valley Community College and local high schools to promote college access and success, and creating enrichment/tutoring/mentorship programs for the Sparrow’s Nest of NW MT residents.
