MTCC UM We Are Montana in the Classroom

Montana in the Classroom is a new Broader Impacts Group project that seeks a VISTA to expand its services around the state. We Are Montana in the Classroom connects university faculty and grad students to Montana's K-12 classrooms. UM Faculty members serve as role models for students, share about their field, and bring an interactive activity. This project will address the urgent need for educational opportunity for Montanans. Particularly in the state’s rural and tribal communities, college attainment falls well below the national average of 40%: 18% in Mineral County, 24% in Treasure County, 24% in Sanders County, and 20% in Toole County, to sample a few. This project will promote educational and career opportunities that can help break the cycle of poverty. Specifically, the project will reach K-12 learners in communities where many children do not have regular access to higher education and career role models, or may not know about the educational and career opportunities available to them with a college degree. In Montana, 19% of children live in poverty; in neighboring Lake County, where We Are Montana in the Classroom regularly reaches tribal youth on the Flathead Reservation, that figure rises to 33%. Research indicates that role models positively impact young learners’ knowledge of and interest in educational and career opportunities and higher education can provide a fast track out of poverty. We Are Montana in the Classroom is motivated by the belief that many of Montana’s rural and tribal youth lack access to role models—and that this organization has the potential to provide access and inspire students to pursue the educational opportunities they need to overcome poverty.
