Opportunity Council - Program & Fund Development VISTA

The YWCA addresses the needs of high-risk SINGLE women, an underserved portion of the homeless population and whose risk factors are exponentially greater than those of homeless men. Within our programs, 100% of participants are low or no income and 92% of the women are victims of violence. We provide services and programs to meet critical needs, foster self-sufficiency and promote good health and safety. Auxiliary programs help women make the move to permanent work and housing quickly and effectively. Programs include: Case management which ensures that all residents make full use of available community resources; The on-site Back to Work Boutique offers free, appropriate clothing for interviews and work; A Financial Literacy program which assists women achieve financial independence; Life skills and personal growth classes; A scholarship program for college classes; job training and career alternatives as well as housing for up to 36 women. Our mission of serving women is vital to Whatcom County’s strategic plan to end homelessness. By creating strategic partnerships in the community they are bridging the gap for these women to address barriers to self-sufficiency. Through fund development the YWCA’s programming of providing emergency/transitional housing resources, job readiness skills, case management, and access to community resources will become more sustainable. A VISTA member would benefit the YWCA by strengthening capacity, building community partnerships, and developing strong funding potential. The Opportunity Council is a private non-profit community action agency serving Whatcom, Island and San Juan counties. The mission of the agency is to act as a catalyst for positive change, both in the community and in the lives of the people it serves. Beyond this, the Opportunity Council houses 11 AmeriCorps VISTA positions throughout Whatcom County, acting as an intermediary agency between the individual sites and the national VISTA program.
