Tukwila Pantry Volunteer Engagement Specialist, UWKC

The City of Tukwila, Washington is just south of Seattle in King County. South King county has a large percentage of families with children living in poverty. At Cascade View Elementary School, just two blocks from the Tukwila Pantry, over 80% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. At the Tukwila Pantry we secure and distribute nutritious food to clients. Volunteers from the Tukwila Pantry pick up food daily from local grocery stores and other sources. The Tukwila Pantry is an emergency food bank. Clients come in when they can’t make ends meet. Sometimes they have applied for food stamps but haven’t received them yet, or sometimes an unexpected expense such as a medical bill or higher than normal utilities have interrupted their budget. There were 16,494 household visits from Seatac, Burien, Tukwila and the surrounding areas in 2015, up from the 14,700 in 2013. This position is one of 45 VISTAs serving through United Way of King County. We deploy AmeriCorps VISTAs with partner agencies doing excellent work in these arenas. Our AmeriCorps members enable these agencies to improve services to clients. By providing capacity-building support, VISTA members make valuable contributions to increasing the impact of King County’s nonprofit sector on our most vulnerable populations. United Way VISTAs meet as a team at least monthly to participate in high-quality training and professional development, networking opportunities, service projects and reflection. Our members become part of an extensive nonprofit network with access to excellent resources and learning opportunities. While gaining valuable professional skills and experience, our team works together to change communities and improve lives.
