Turn the Page KC VISTA Leader
Turn the Page KC mobilizes the community to achieve reading proficiency at grade level or above for all 3rd graders in Kansas City, Missouri. The National Research Council asserts that “academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone’s reading skill at the end of third grade. A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school.” The fact is that low-income third-graders who cannot read proficiently today are all too likely to become our nation’s lowest-income citizens tomorrow. Turn the Page KC has engaged in a collective impact initiative with 6 nonprofits fighting poverty through education in KCMO, supporting AmeriCorps VISTA members at each of these sub-sites as they build organizational capacity to further the 3rd-grade literacy movement.
