MNA 2017 - Urban Neighborhoods Initiative Detroit

As a VISTA with Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, you’ll partner with the Southwest Detroit College Access Network (SDCAN) and the Attendance Initiative. With the SDCAN, you will be creating a college-going culture in Southwest Detroit, creating a cradle-to-career pipeline for area youth, and affecting change in systems that increase college access, retention, and graduation rates. With the Attendance Initiative, you’ll help improve learning and success in low achieving schools by supporting the citywide attendance campaign, supporting attendance teams at neighborhood schools, and supporting a Health Provider Action Team to evaluate the impacts of health on attendance. Southwest Detroit is racially and culturally diverse with over 70% Hispanic, 20% white, and 5% African American. Additionally, 1 in 2 households are below the poverty line. This is a community whose children face many barriers, and the VISTA will be an important part of reducing those barriers. Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) is a statewide nonprofit organization that serves its nonprofit members to advance their missions. MNA's vision is that Michigan's nonprofit sector be a vital leader in building and sustaining thriving communities, and MNA believes that active, engaged volunteers are imperative.
