*AC Goodwill*- NEXT Charter School - Derry
Goodwill places AmeriCorps members in schools and nonprofits to increase student engagement through targeted mentoring of students that face significant challenges and need additional interventions to succeed in school and life. Members utilize the Check and Connect mentoring model supporting students through: 1) Weekly one-on-one check-ins with 15-25 students. 2) Gathering behavioral and school data. 3) Connecting students to needed interventions. 4) Connecting with families. Member support is provided through mentoring, academic support, service learning, additional interventions, and/or planning for or recruiting volunteers to support these activities. Check and Connect is a research proven model created by the University of Minnesota, proven to increase academic engagement, decrease absences and tardiness, and improve persistence in students who are disengaged or at risk of dropout. Additional information can be found at The mission of Next Charter School is to meet the needs of students not fully served within a traditional high school educational program and to employ a system of instructional and assessment practices that values competency, inquiry, flexibility, and the social nature of learning so that all students will graduate and initiate post-secondary learning options. Next is a state-authorized, public high school of choice that maintains a strong partnership with the local K-8 school district. Next began serving students in 2013 with the aim to attract students who are disenfranchised, disconnected, and/or disengaged. The percentages of special education students and students identified for free/reduced lunch – based on poverty scales - are significantly higher than traditional public schools in the local area. Our mission attempts to provide students with a personalized and individualized learning environment. To that end, Next operates under the following precept – β€œOne size does not fit all.”

Member Duties : The primary role of a member is to work directly with students. As a start-up organization entering its fourth year, all staff help to define, shape, and guide the organization. As a result, members participate in staff meetings, exhibitions (public displays of student work), morning and closing meetings, parent meetings, special education meetings, field experiences, team challenges, and public outreach. Depending on knowledge, skill, and interest, members can operate as a co-teacher, 1:1 tutor, coach, club facilitator, or advisor. All members operate Check and Connect, a tiered program to support student achievement and run small group executive functioning support classes. Lastly, members attend monthly student-parent meetings to support their growth and report on their progress.
