BMVP - Workforce Housing in Red Lodge, Montana!

Connecting people and building community by catalyzing change and sharing resources to build a strong, vibrant, resilient, inclusive community. As a small resort community, affordable housing is a big issue for the local workforce, many of which live in poverty and low-income situations (nearly 30% of households and families in Red Lodge make less than $25k a year. According to the recent Housing Needs Assessment, the median home price is $229,000 but the median household income is $48,636 – leaving a large gap between what people can afford and what is available. There is a housing stock of 2193 units, of those units, only 149 are unoccupied and available for rent or for sale, without taking affordability into account. Two years ago, the local Habitat for Humanity chapter closed, leaving a larger gap in services. By increasing the stock of permanently affordable rentals and homes for sale, providing training and education, creating innovative programs to address home owner and renter needs, and building awareness in the community, the organization will be providing incremental and long-term benefits in the community. It will mean more of the vital workers in our community (teachers, firefighters, nurses, police, service industry workers, childcare providers, etc.) will be able to afford to live and invest in the community the work in. Stable housing is imperative for the success of kids in school throughout all stages of development. In a recent Housing Assessment, about half of respondents reported spending more than 30% of their income on housing, which becomes even more burdensome in low income situations. This project will alleviate poverty by helping increase permanent affordable housing stock, providing financial management/budgeting/renter education, and connecting people to programs and services available.
