BMVP - Kids in Motion Curriculum Development & Integration

The Planning and Community Services Department is committed to building a safe community that uses its resources wisely. Our services and programs help maintain a high quality of life while providing a variety of housing and businesses choices for all residents. Chronic school absence is associated with lower academic performance and is a clear predictor of drop-out. Safe and reliable transportation to / from school can be a significant barrier to attendance. Utilizing the Housing/Transportation Index tool, the 2013 Billings Complete Streets Benchmark Report found transportation costs account for nearly 30% of Billings-area household incomes. The Moving to Equity report found this number is higher for those with lower incomes and, according to the book The Right to Transportation: Moving to Equity, lack of transportation options is one of the most significant barriers to success; up to 96% of welfare recipients do not own a car. Increasing knowledge about alternative modes of transportation ensures children from lower income demographics gain the same access to education, despite potential transportation barriers their families may possess. The education gained by exploring alternative modes of transportation will promote self-confidence in the students while supporting a welcoming and inviting school environment, enhancing school attendance and lowering drop-out rates. Increasing bicycling and walking rates to school by 15 percent increases the level of student engagement in the classroom through access to education. Empowering students will decrease the amount of family budget spent on transportation and increase the level of student engagement in the classroom through access to education. Empowering students in this way increases the self-esteem of low-income children, their sense of belonging and meaningful involvement in their education, and gives them leadership skills they will take into the future as they grow.
