VYT-Salvation Farms-VT Commodity Program
Vermont Youth Tomorrow places AmeriCorps VISTA members across Vermont in effective anti-poverty initiatives to promote hope, justice, and wellbeing of all VT youth and families. Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in VT’s food system through agricultural surplus management. Our activities are based in farm-fresh food rescue to reduce food loss on VT farms and increase consumption of wholesome, regionally produced foods by our state’s more vulnerable residents. We engage cross-sector partners in achieving our mission. Salvation Farms directs surplus crops to institutions serving vulnerable populations: the young, sick, elderly, incarcerated, and food-insecure. The majority of recipients are low-income. We believe that food, a common and essential resource, is a vital tool for social change. Providing high quality, nutritious food to folks who may otherwise lack access impacts personal health and the ability to focus and function in a stable way. Our programs also engage alternative populations, i.e., incarcerated individuals. We have confidence that engaging any and all residents can positively impact their well-being and ability to connect with the community in a safe and gratifying way, likely to lead to healthier life choices and interactions. Through dedicated focus on program development and stabilization, the VISTA member fills vital capacity building needs so that our programs performs as envisioned, addressing the effects of poverty, and allowing Salvation Farms to share our successes with a diverse set of stakeholders. As a young and innovative non-profit on the forefront of building a new segment of our region’s food system we will benefit greatly from the fresh perspective and energy of a VISTA. The main office for Salvation Farms is in Morrisville, VT; the office for the VISTA is in Winooski, VT.
