VYT-Salvation Farms-Community Engagement VISTA

PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program (VYT) supports effective initiatives that help low-income youth and families develop job skills & academic proficiency, gain access to affordable housing & healthy food, and cultivate the social assets that they need to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors such as opioid use, and ultimately thrive. SITE: Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in VT’s food system through agricultural surplus management. Our activities are based in farm-fresh food rescue to reduce food loss & increase consumption of wholesome, regionally produced foods by VT’s most vulnerable residents: the young, sick, incarcerated, & food-insecure. We believe that food is a vital tool for social change. We engage cross-sector partners in achieving our mission. Providing high quality, nutritious food to folks who may otherwise lack access impacts personal health & the ability to focus & function in a stable way. Our programs engage underserved populations (formerly incarcerated individuals, at-risk youth, & single moms). By engaging any & all residents we can positively impact their well-being & ability to connect with the community, leading to healthier life choices & interactions. The VISTA Member assists Salvation Farms in strengthening & refining our community engagement efforts – this includes relationships with the general public, farms, charitable food outlets, and other program partners. A large focus of this position is engaging our stakeholder advisory group and organizing a day-long summit in 2019. Salvation Farms has been a leader in VT for the responsible management of farm surplus crops for 13 years. We have a bold vision & our team is small but mighty. The VISTA makes great impact by building the capacity of Salvation Farms. Together we increase access to fresh-foods by those most vulnerable VT. SalvationFarms.org
