VYT-Salvation Farms-VT Gleaning Capacity Building VISTA

Vermont Youth Tomorrow places AmeriCorps VISTA members across Vermont in effective anti-poverty initiatives to promote hope, justice, and wellbeing of all VT youth and families. Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management. Our organization serves farms, volunteers, and sites that provide food to the nutritionally and financially insecure. We partner with organizations across the state, building relationship-based programs to glean, process, and distribute un-marketed crops, crops that would have otherwise gone uneaten. We value experiential learning opportunities, knowing that educating individuals and communities about locally available foods and how to use them will alleviate some of the effects poverty has on individuals and households. (SalvationFarms.org) The VISTA will assist Salvation Farms’ in reestablishing its regional Lamoille Valley Gleaning program and support the development of the Vermont Gleaning Collective (VGC) network. Community organizing at local level will reduce food loss and move wholesome food to local residents, while engaging community members in experiential learning opportunities. In addition, the communities served by the Vermont Gleaning Collective will benefit from an increase in successful gleaning activities. Salvation Farms has been a leader in Vermont in regard to the responsible management of farm surplus crops. The VISTA will directly promote our mission by supporting gleaning efforts, educating communities about the importance of managing available but unmarketed farm-fresh foods in building our state’s food independence. Salvation Farms has a bold vision. Our team is small but mighty. A VISTA will make great impact by building the capacity of Salvation Farms. Together we will increase access to fresh-foods by those most vulnerable in state.
