VYT-Salvation Farms-VT Gleaning Capacity Building VISTA
PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program (VYT) supports effective initiatives that help low-income youth and families develop job skills & academic proficiency, gain access to affordable housing & healthy food, and cultivate the social assets that they need to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors such as opioid use, and ultimately thrive. SITE: Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in VT’s food system through agricultural surplus management. We serve farms, volunteers, & sites that provide food to the nutritionally & financially insecure. We partner with organizations across VT, building relationship-based programs to glean, process, & distribute un-marketed crops that otherwise go uneaten. We value experiential learning opportunities, knowing that educating individuals & communities about locally available foods & how to use them to alleviate some of the effects poverty on individuals & households. The VISTA assists in strengthening the regional Lamoille Valley Gleaning program & supports the development of the VT Gleaning Collective network. Community organizing at a local level reduces food loss & moves wholesome food to local residents, while engaging community members in experiential learning opportunities. Also, the communities served by the VT Gleaning Collective benefit from an increase in successful gleaning activities. We have been a leader in VT for the responsible management of farm surplus crops for 13 years. The VISTA directly promotes our mission through gleaning efforts & educating communities about managing available but un-marketed farm-fresh foods. Salvation Farms has a bold vision. Our team is small but mighty. The VISTA makes great impact by building the capacity of Salvation Farms. Together we will increase access to fresh-foods by those most vulnerable in state.
