School District 6's Nutrition Services Summer Associates

Weld County School District 6 (WCSD6) is located in Greeley and Evans, has a student enrollment of 21,000, and a free-and-reduced meal rate of 66% district wide. Over the past 7 years, WCSD6 has been on a mission to improve the food we are offering to our students. This has led us to kick out highly processed foods and completely revamp our system which included opening a centralized production kitchen to support the preparation of fresh meals from scratch, and sourcing local ingredients when possible. Recently, WCSD6 Nutrition Services was awarded a grant from the USDA which has been utilized to develop and implement a Food Hub concept. This Food Hub will be focused on aggregating as much local produce as possible during the Colorado peak season. The produce will then be used immediately or washed, chopped, blanched, and frozen for later use throughout the school year. This concept will allow for maximum utilization of local produce throughout the school year. In future years, this Food Hub will grow and gain the ability to support neighboring school districts and possibly other food service organizations (e.g. food banks, healthcare facilities, etc.). In order to continue to provide nutritious meals during summer break, WCSD6 Nutrition Services will offer a federally-funded Summer Food Service Program for children at 13 sites across Greeley and Evans. Lunch and breakfast will be served to any child between the age of 1 and 18 years old free of charge.

Member Duties : The Summer Associates will work at our Summer Food Service Program sites to assist with breakfast and lunch meal service, to include set up and clean up. Members will gain knowledge on nutritional standards and requirements, as well as how to run an efficient service line in a safe and sanitary manner while providing an at-risk population access to healthy food. After assisting with summer meal service, the associates will go to our Central Production Kitchen to assist with processing locally sourced vegetables in the Food Hub, and occasionally assist with meal production following a scratch cooking model. While at the Central Production Kitchen, members will gain experience and skills for food service and meal preparation to include food safety and sanitation, with a focus on nutrition and scratch cooking, as well as locally sourcing foods and preserving the harvest.
