MTCC - Sunburst Unlimited Summer in the Garden
 
 
 
Gardens from Garbage, sponsored by Sunburst Unlimited, Inc. in Great Falls, MT, grew out of a recognized need for local food sustainability - for the vitality of our environment and our communities. Our current food system relies heavily on transporting food grown in distant environments, which results in fuel consumption and reliance on an unsustainable system. Instead, we teach others how to grow food by nourishing what we have in our community and connecting with others who are doing the same. Sunburst Unlimited, Inc. grows fresh food for agencies like the Boys & Girls Club, Head Start, and Meals on Wheels. This project will support and increase food access for at-risk youth.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps Summer Associate will * Coach participating youth how to grow their own produce, and work as a team to tend a garden. * Work with the Westside Orchard Garden Manager on a variety of tasks in the Garden to support food access and availability. * Facilitate the FRESH Rescue Program by helping glean 7,000 lbs of fresh produce from local grocery stores for delivery to 5 “Kid Kitchens” in Cascade County, MT * Educate youth in the development of fresh food recipes and help prepare meals utilizing produce gleaned from the grocery stores
