Brigit's Bounty Summer Associates

Brigit’s Bounty Community Resources is a giving garden and orchard in Frederick, Colorado, that provides free fresh produce to the public in tandem with educational youth programming. Brigit’s Bounty is the only community garden within the Carbon Valley that distributes all of its produce freely to the public through local distribution channels such as food banks and health centers. Access to fresh food is a particular issue for local youth as many children who attend Thunder Valley K-8 School receive free or reduced lunch. BBCR gives students hands-on learning experiences in their garden and in-class educational opportunities to help them understand how responsibly producing fresh food can benefit their bodies and the land. In 2015, 400 students received free field trips and 1800 pounds of produce were distributed throughout the Carbon Valley area. BBCR partners with many volunteer groups and community agencies such as United Way, Salud Family Health Center, and Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts of America to administer these services. This summer BBCR will have the opportunity to bring children to the garden for a summer camp where they will help with the main harvest and learn about various aspects of gardening. The camp will take place outdoors on our 2 acres of land which hosts a fruit tree orchard, vineyard, pumpkin patch, and labyrinth in addition to our one acre giving garden. Possible camp topics include plant identification, soil health and amendment, fruit trees, pollinators, composting, greenhouse skills, vermiculture, and boundless other options, including guest speakers and barbeques.

Member Duties : The BBCR Summer Associate will lead a summer camp for elementary school children focusing on making a garden grow bountifully, ranging from the nutrients in our soil to the health/diversity of the garden’s ecosystem. The camp creates a rare opportunity for children of low income families to have a camp experience. Most of the children will be from low income families, and thus will receive the produce that they have helped to grow. The Summer Associate will also be involved with researching and fixing up a greenhouse (~8’x13’) so that it can be used to grow crops next winter, as well as coordinating volunteers and working on the myriad of tasks that need to be done in a one-acre garden. He/she will also help with a booth at the Farmer’s Market and other community events that publicize the garden. The Summer Associate in this position will learn gardening and supervision skills, as well as gain experience working hands-on with children.
