Learning Community Integrated Studies & Social Justice VISTA

Over the last five years, we have worked hard as a middle grades community to grow our adult learning around race, gender, and class inequities, and to craft curriculum to grow students’ critical consciousness so that they might take thoughtful action to create a more just world. We have also had the support of VISTAs to enable us to try out some models for bringing this work to our students. Overall, the goal of this project is to create and revise systems that allow teachers to work more collaboratively, particularly but not exclusively through the lens of social action. Looking to next year, the Middle Grades Integrated Studies & Social Action VISTA will work closely with our middle school director to fully implement the work of creating cohesive and supportive structures in the middle grades, including supporting students and adults growing schema in these critical issues, as well as social action project development. Additionally, the social action VISTA will support the middle school director in making sure our internal discipline practices align with our beliefs as a community about empowering young people and in creating and revising systems to better support integration. That will mean research on other systems, gathering information about what other people have done, observing our current systems, interviewing teachers, students, and families, and more.
