MCC-USM STEM Partnerships Coordinator VISTA

Maine Campus Compact (MCC) is a coalition of 18 member campuses whose purpose is to catalyze and lead a movement to reinvigorate the public purposes and civic mission of higher education. We seek to transform our campuses in ways that develop better informed, active citizen problem-solvers, stronger communities, and a more just democratic society. We believe that our campuses must be vital agents and architects of a flourishing democracy. MCC’s VISTA Program is focused on the development of high-quality, sustainable programs on campuses throughout Maine with the aim to increase access to, and success during, higher education for low income individuals through programs focused on improving college aspirations, increasing civic engagement among students, faculty and staff, and increasing access to higher education for low-income individuals. MCC is currently recruiting for a team of 9 VISTAs to serve at host site campuses across the beautiful state of Maine.

Member Duties : As part of a dynamic team in the Community Engagement & Career Development office, University of Southern Maine's AmeriCorps*VISTA STEM Partnerships Coordinator will continue the development and growth of STEM focused service-learning partnerships with local schools to increase college aspirations, improve STEM literacy, and provide engaged learning opportunities for low income college students. USM is a comprehensive public university of 8,000+ students in Portland, Maine. Local K-12 schools enroll students from families who have immigrated from Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, and more, as well as economically disadvantaged Maine-born students. These students may struggle to gain a social and economic foothold and this VISTA work is part of a larger community engagement program that supports USM students in preparing for life, work, and citizenship, while meeting community-identified needs.
