The Environmental Education Coordinator at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually NWR has complete responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Refuge’s environmental education program. The education program includes services provided to all formal education groups, K-college, visiting the Refuge for the purpose of studying the natural and cultural history of the area. The Coordinator provides direct teaching of indoor and outdoor activities to students while on school field trips and the gives the opening and closing sessions. Other duties include: presenting orientations to groups on site; oversight and facilitation of groups while visiting the Refuge; administrative aspects of this program such as answering inquires from teachers, mailing of field trip applications and confirmations; and scheduling of field trips and volunteers. The Refuge is located on a River Delta and has a number of different habitat types and abundant plant and animal species. The Refuge aslo has four miles of trails and a wonderful education center. This position is contingent on funding. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received with interviews taking place until placement is filled.

Member Duties : The member: teaches activities directly to students both indoors and on trail walks; plans and implements three teacher workshops; and reviews and evaluates current education center activities and adapts activities for different grade levels. The member will recruit volunteers to assist with the education program including training volunteers, tracking hours, and providing recognition. The member will have direct contact with other Watershed Education Coordinators to provide the specialized “Eye on Nature Program” which includes coordinating Refuge fields trips with partners and recruiting and scheduling volunteers.
