My Brother's Keeper-Arlington Hills Community Center (CSP)

The Arlington Hills Community Center is a busy and fast-paced recreation center and library recently opened in an underserved urban neighborhood. Situated in the Payne-Maryland Neighborhood, the Arlington Hills Community Center serves a diverse community of Hmong, Karen, and Hispanic immigrants and refugees as well as a large African American population. The community has a very young population, 30% of whom are under 18 and is located in a high poverty community serving a large population of children and teens of color. We are deeply invested in providing resources and programming for youth and families to safely learn and grow. Through this project VISTA will gather data on the needs of our community so that we are able to strengthen our services and increase capacity to meet these needs. We are seeking a VISTA member to work to close the opportunity gaps for young men of color and their families as part of the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative. Part of our mission as a library is to provide resources for the continuous success of the community. Our VISTA’s community-infused research will inform his/her targeted goals and strategies for capacity building by bringing our communities of young men of color, and parents of boys of color together and listening to their goals and dreams for themselves and for their children. We will do our best to provide resources and remove barriers to help them attain these goals.
