Elpis Enterprises (CSP)

Our VISTA project stands apart from many other VISTA opportunities due to its unique combination of providing a VISTA member with a chance to use and develop business skills and people skills within a framework of social justice. Elpis Enterprises is one of only a very few agencies in the metro Twin Cities area that provides both a paid work experience and employment readiness training specifically designed to meet the unique needs of young people between 16 and 23 years of age who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Our social enterprises form the framework for our paid work experience and employment readiness training. They are: a) screen printing; b) woodworking and c) e-commerce. Our trainees also lead 120 to 150 community-based experiential screen printing and woodworking workshops each year. With the work experience provided and the skills developed at Elpis transferable to any employment setting, our goal is guaranteed employment upon completing our program. The central goal of our VISTA program is to deepen and expand our employment readiness skills training component. This is done by using customer growth to launch a deeper marketing, sales and customer service skills training component that will provide our trainees with in-demand job skills. The VISTA project builds upon Elpis’ proven track record and planned program enhancements. They include acquiring our first automated screen printing equipment, which will allow us to offer new products and increase production capacity. Guiding the VISTA project is our business advisory council, an updated business plan developed by CliftonLarsonAllen, and a communication plan developed on a pro bono basis by Weber Shandwick. **This position is part of the City of St. Paul VISTA Cohort. This cohort provides a learning community of 20 fellow VISTA members all serving within Saint Paul. We provide bi-weekly professional development training and additional support throughout the year.
