Civic Engagement Coordinator-CLUES (CSP)

The Youth in Action (YA!) Program provides college readiness enrichment through mentoring, for Latino high school students in St. Paul. Along with informing students about higher education, the VISTA plays an important role in shaping them into active members of their communities. Throughout the year, the VISTA will be responsible for implementing and enhancing a myriad of civic engagement lessons from previous years as well as creating new lessons to be added to the curriculum. Additionally, the VISTA will build partnerships with local organizations in support of students volunteering in their communities. By engaging Latino youth in the systems and processes within their community, the YA! program promotes our youth as contributing stakeholders, further invested in their own futures as well as the future of their community. Armed with this new knowledge and the experiences gained through participation in the program, these students will be able to more effectively advocate for their communities as they continue with their personal education plans and professional career paths. The VISTA will engage with the Youth Advisory Board which is a group of student leaders who meet together once a month to discuss and plan programming and activities. The position will also enhance volunteer processes and mentor outreach, recruitment, and support. One of the sustainable contributions will be developing mentor orientation and training procedures and activities. Through ongoing support of the VISTA member, and the program as a whole, students feel encouraged and supported in pursuing new opportunities to strengthen their personal skill sets and improve their academic and professional resumes, as well as identify and address areas of need within their communities, on both a local and national level.
