2017 Education Plus School Based Clinics

Education Plus Health operates health clinics at 14+ schools throughout Philadelphia Title I public, charter, and private schools. In addition to providing the traditional school nursing care and State-mandated health screenings, these health clinics also provide acute and preventive care, reproductive health care, and in-school management of chronic diseases, which reduces the number of student absences per year. The clinics also provide universal mental health screening and integrated mental health and several piloting schools. Additionally, the clinics work with children and their families to ensure that students are enrolled in health insurance programs and have access to routine, preventive medical care. Americorp VISTA have been an important resource in the growth of these Education Plus Health School Based Health Centers over the last several years. The VISTA of 2017 will come at a pivotal time, with the analysis, reflection, and planning following the first year of a formal external evaluation, and a shift outward across the State in advocacy for school based health centers. Two VISTA will plan their own education and engagement efforts for the year, in collaboration with the school based health center staff and administrative team for 14 and growing clinics.
