SerVermont - Vermont Legal Aid

Vermont Legal Aid recognizes that poverty is perpetuated in multifaceted ways, many of which are the products of systemic racism, and we strive to provide holistic solutions that dismantle systemic racism and fight both the causes and effects of poverty. We serve a diverse client base and are committed to building a diverse staff to help us better serve them. We also know that staff with lived experience of the criminal justice system, health inequities, and/or substance use bring important insights to our work. We are seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA to support VLA's mission by building organizational capacity. Vermont Legal Aid provides information, advice, and representation in a wide range of civil legal areas, including housing, education, family law, public benefits, health care, and consumer law. Together with our partner, Legal Services Vermont, we provide services to over 21,500 people each year. We provide free civil legal services primarily to Vermont residents who are low-income, which is the heart of legal services work. We also have specialized projects that provide services to, and systemic advocacy on behalf of, people who have disabilities; who are over 60; have experienced illegal discrimination in housing; are victims of crime; or who have a problem related to health care insurance or services. We run a legal advice helpline with our partner organization, Legal Services Vermont, as well as offer practical tools and helpful information on our website www.vtlawhelp.org.
