Greenvale Park Community School - Early Learners - (MLC)

The Greenvale Park Community School mobilizes community resources and partnerships to offer free, out-of-school-time programming for students and families to boost academic success, as well as build a sense of community connectedness. With support of the Literacy Leader, program staff intend to better serve low-income families and English language learners, especially the growing Latino population. As a part of this initiative, the Literacy Leader will build upon existing community relationships and resources to: 1) improve and expand early literacy programming; 2) coordinate volunteers from the high school, nearby colleges and community to support out-of-school time programming, and; 3) strengthen connections between school-day and out-of-school time academic support. Influencing young learners and their families at the beginning of their journey helps them see the biggest growth and impact on their future academic success. Families will rapidly be able to develop the skills and mindset to open more doors for them later in life. Through their service, the VISTA member will have opportunities to train staff and volunteers, build relationships with students and families, and foster a culture of family participation in early learning and beyond.
