*Goodwill VISTA* Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities, Maine

Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition (BBHCC) is a non-profit, grassroots, comprehensive public health coalition that serves the four-town area of Bucksport, Orland, Verona Island, and Prospect, situated on the scenic Penobscot Bay. The coalition has mobilized community partnerships to address the health and wellness needs of Bucksport Bay residents throughout its 21-year history. We develop strategies to confront the social determinants of health that can create barriers to accessing health care. We recently launched the Bucksport Bay Thriving in Place Partnership program (TiP), which helps seniors and those with disabilities and chronic diseases remain safely in their homes and communities. The Bucksport Bay area is rural, and many of our citizens struggle with poverty. Ours is an older population, many of whom are either disabled or otherwise living on a fixed income. The median household income in Hancock County is $47,030 and 11.5% meet federal poverty standards. Just over sixteen percent are currently without health insurance. There is currently 4.8% unemployment, due in large part to the closure of the Verso Paper Mill in late 2014. It had been the largest employer in the area and a mainstay of the economy for 84 years before shutting its doors, leaving many residents out of work and wreaking havoc on the local economy. Member Duties : The VISTA will work with the BBHCC Board of Directors and Health Planning Director (HPD) to help to sustain the Coalition’s Thriving in Place (TiP) program. TiP is a continuum of care program that helps the elderly and those with disabilities or chronic conditions remain in their homes and communities by working with partner organizations to provide services (such as transportation, meals, wellness programs, housing) to allow residents to thrive in place. We have recently entered the third year of a three-year grant to create and implement TiP. The VISTA will assist with creating sustainable funding streams and recruiting volunteers to support the TiP program beyond the existing grant period. In addition, the AmeriCorps VISTA will assist in the education and development of our youth population into successful, healthy and educated adults by working with our committees to help ensure young learners are ready for school and to promote healthy habits among our school-age population.
