San Juan - Chama Watershed Partnership

The DOI/VISTA will serve under the supervision of the Bureau of Reclamation and the Chama Peak Land Alliance (CPLA) to create strategic, educational outreach plans that promote the efforts of the San Juan-Chama Partnership (SJCP). The DOI/VISTA will serve to alleviate poverty within the northern Rio Arriba County, and surrounding communities, by: creating workforce development and job training opportunities for underserved youth in forest and watershed restoration; assisting the SJCP in assessing the condition of the headwater forests in the San Juan-Chama watershed and the impact of current forest treatments to reduce the potential for a catastrophic wildlife outside the natural range of variation within the surrounding impoverished communities; based on these findings, strategize with the SJCP to make recommendations on future, sustainable investments to protect this critical water supply for impoverished communities; engage in community outreach to educate stakeholders on the importance of the SJCP for downstream users; and engage with other CPLA and Reclamation projects that create systems, relationships, and resources that will remain long after the 3-year VISTA project ends.
