YNDC Summer Associate

Iron Roots Urban Farm, a project of Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, is a 1.7 acre working farm and training center. Iron Roots grows fresh produce in an urban food desert neighborhood, encourages business creation on vacant land, helps city residents develop successful microenterprises with the goal of creating jobs, and teaches neighbors about growing food and healthy lifestyles. Iron Roots fulfills this mission by holding nutrition, cooking, and gardening classes, operating a seasonal farmers’ market on a distressed urban corridor, and accepting SNAP for on-farm purchasing of produce. In addition, the farm works one on one with urban growers to answer questions and support their operations, and is incubating a new urban farm onsite during the 2016 growing season. Iron Roots also provides a Community Toolshed, which loans gardening and landscaping tools to the community for free, helping community members clean up their properties and neighborhoods, establish and maintain garden spaces, and complete new community projects. YNDC has strong partnerships with the local health system and other organizations that promote local food in the city. The farm hosts biweekly nutrition classes for the Resource Mothers program, which serves new and expecting mothers, most of whom are younger and low-income. The Idora Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is located in a vacant lot on a heavily traveled urban corridor on the south side of Youngstown. Market vendors include urban growers, rural farmers, and food preparers. The market accepts SNAP, WIC, and Senior Farmers’ Nutrition Program vouchers. The market also doubles SNAP purchases up to $20 each visit, making healthy food more affordable for low-income individuals and putting more money in the pockets of farmers, many of whom are low-income themselves.

Member Duties : Summer Associates at Iron Roots will participate in growing and harvesting crops, maintaining farm equipment, working with compost, working in greenhouse facilities, and assisting with training programs at the farm. In addition, the Associates will help with the facilitation of the Idora Neighborhood Farmers’ Market, a market that serves a distressed urban corridor with a SNAP Double-Up program, which doubles the purchases of SNAP recipients at market produce vendors. The Associates will also support the Community Toolshed, which loans out gardening and landscaping tools to community members for free to help them complete community projects and fix up their properties. By the end of 10 weeks, Associates will have helped to facilitate at least five training activities and helped to harvest and market hundreds of pounds of fresh and healthy produce to neighborhoods across the city, as well as providing market welcome and orientation to low-income shoppers at the weekly market days.
