WSC, YMCA Earth Service Corps, Program Instructor

The YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC) empowers young people to be effective, global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership development and cultural competency. Founded in 1989 as a partnership between one high school and the YMCA of Greater Seattle, YESC has grown over the last 20 years to become a core leadership program of the YMCA of the USA. In Seattle, YESC serves more than 1000 students annually through school-based environmental education and service learning clubs, outdoor stewardship opportunities, and leadership retreats. Serving both high school and middle schools almost entirely in public schools, YESC removes barriers by bringing environmental education and service programming directly to students. As a result of this inclusive approach, in the 2014-2015 academic year YESC students put in more than 8,000 hours of service in schools, parks, and trails throughout King County. At the core of YESC is the belief that students, when empowered to take leadership of their own clubs, will put great ideas into action. Whether in clubs or at regional service projects students take a leadership role in designing and running all activities. AmeriCorps Members serving with YESC are a key part of the program as they engage and empower young people while supporting environmental learning, innovative service projects, leadership development and cross-cultural awareness. This position is contingent on funding.
