Austin Public Library Summer Associate

Serve with Austin Public Library and help fight summer learning loss which describes the phenomenon of children and youth who are not exposed to brain enriching activities during the summer. Often, this occurs for low-income students and contributes to the widening achievement gap between low-income students and middle/high income students. This gap leads to lower graduation rates of low-income students which in turn leads to economic hardship and a continuation of generational poverty.

Member Duties : The APL associates will serve for 10 weeks to bridge the summer reading achievement gap by increasing accessibility of resources provided at the library. They will assist in developing a docent program to make underserved patrons feel more comfortable in the space and to teach them how to fully utilize all that the library has to offer. This includes free conference space, access to library materials and classes and programs. The Library seeks to address poverty through equity in our services and access to information for all. This position would work to ensure that underserved patrons have equal access to materials regardless of their current level of comfort. The associate will also assist the youth services department at the New Central Library with several programs and partnerships over the course of the summer. In addition, the associate will assist with the Summer Reading Program events and will work to engage low-income and underserved youth with summer reading opportunities.
