English Learning Center – Program Development VISTA (LitMN)

The English Learning Center (ELC) serves nearly 300 adult learners each year, with 100-150 students enrolled at any one time. All of our students are learning English and many are learning literacy and technology skills for the first time in their lives. Most of our students come from Somalia, Ethiopia, Ecuador and Mexico. Many students begin at the lowest literacy levels, often learning the basics of phonics. An impressive corps of volunteers teach classes in the morning and evening, year round. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved all of our classes online using Google Classroom. The ELC provides a welcoming and professional environment for learners, and a unique venue for volunteers to have a rich and impactful teaching experience. Community is central to the ELC’s mission; we build strong cross-cultural relationships that benefit both students and volunteers. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful experience working with an education-focused nonprofit in program development, curriculum and instruction and evaluation. The ELC has a tight-knit staff dedicated to professional growth and learning. We’re looking for someone with a high capacity for learning and who likes to write. While experience with education is a plus, we recognize that personal and professional development happens in a variety of ways. Our interview and hiring process values life experience, attitude, and cultural competency in addition to formal education background. Wherever you start from, we are sure you will learn from your year as a Literacy Leader at the ELC and that we, in turn, have much to learn from you!
