English Learning Center - Program Development (MLC)

The English Learning Center (ELC) offers multiple levels of English, math, and citizenship classes, as well as a computer lab for adult learners to practice English online and gain digital literacy skills. We serve roughly 400 learners each year, with most of our students coming from Somalia, Ethiopia, Ecuador, and Mexico. The ELC serves many students at the lowest literacy levels, often learning the basics of phonics. Our classes are offered mornings and evenings year round and are taught by an impressive corps of volunteer teachers. We provide a welcoming and professional environment for learners, and a unique venue for volunteers to have a rich and impactful teaching experience. The role of community is central to the ELC’s mission and strong cross-cultural relationships are woven in an environment that benefits both students and volunteers. Through trainings, workshops, and discussion, volunteers gain teaching skills, an understanding of issues that immigrants and refugees face, and a deeper appreciation for the contributions that people from all corners of the world make to the community. The Literacy Leader will improve the effectiveness of our literacy classes by developing new learner assessment and goal tracking systems, creating a system for individualized instruction, and connecting with new community partners to boost enrollment and facilitate responsive service provision. These efforts will create pathways out of poverty for low-income students through improved literacy and English fluency and increased access to opportunities such as work, health, education, transportation, and much more. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful experience working with non-profits, in program evaluation, and community outreach. The ELC has a tight-knit staff dedicated to professional growth and learning. We are sure you will learn from your year as a Literacy Leader at the ELC, and that we, in turn, have much to learn from you!
