SWMetro - Advancing Literacy in Technical Education-(MLC)

SouthWest Metro Intermediate District 288 was created to develop and implement programs for students across the southwestern Twin Cities metro region. SWMetro is governed by its 11 member school districts but serves districts located in Carver, Scott, Hennepin, Wright, LeSueur and surrounding counties. The region is a blend of rural and suburban communities and covers over 750 square miles. SWMetro believes everyone has value, potential and ability, and since 1976 it has provided a second chance for youth and adults who are at-risk of academic failure and/or economic insufficiency. It maintains a flexible learning environment working with learners of all ages to help them achieve their personal academic and career goals. SWMetro is committed to engaging students who have fallen behind in credits and are at risk of failing to graduate from high school by creating a Career Technical Academy that will integrate academics into rigorous, relevant, standards-based curriculum within the 6 Minnesota Career Fields, Clusters and Pathways. By providing staff development opportunities that will allow high school academic staff to work with high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers to integrate the core academic skills into career-focused courses, students will understand the connection between what they learn in school and a successful future. VISTA will help align the academic content within career technical education, assessing the literacy skills required in each program and developing curriculum to bring students to that needed skill level in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language. All programs in Career Technical Academy are articulated with multiple post-secondary education institutions so students can earn high school/college credit. *Position is part of MN Literacy Council AmeriCorps VISTA cohort.
