Hiawatha Academies - Family Literacy Coordinator - (MLC)

The Hiawatha Academies network of schools serves over 1,200 scholars in grades K-9. In the 2014-15 school year, 98% of scholars were students of color, 95% were eligible for free/reduced-price lunch, and 74% received English Language Learner services. By 2018, the Hiawatha Academies network will serve scholars grades K-12 and will be the first high performing K-12 charter school network in the state. Hiawatha values rigorous and relevant learning that will empower students to achieve their goals, and has a strong commitment to working with parents and families as partners. Our VISTA will be invaluable in developing a more robust model for family partnership, specifically with regard to literacy. Because many of our students are English language learners and struggling readers, we believe that a critical part of delivering on our mission is providing our students with ample opportunities to read, write, and speak; the VISTA project will help us extend these opportunities beyond the classroom and empower our families to partner with us in improving the literacy of their child. Our VISTA will help to ensure that the resources, training, and opportunities we provide to families are targeting the growth of our scholars with regard to literacy and language. *Proficiency in Spanish desired. *Familiarity with elementary literacy would be helpful, but not required. *This position is part of the Minnesota Literacy Council AmeriCorps VISTA cohort. Applications reviewed on rolling basis until filled. Apply now! www.mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista

Member Duties : VISTA will develop a more robust model for family partnership, specifically with regard to literacy. VISTA will adapt and launch a literacy tutoring intervention program for grades K-2. A key priority will be to recruit and train family members to serve as literacy tutors during the school day. In addition to the benefit to our struggling readers, the parents that tutor will be able to utilize the literacy games and activities used in intervention at home with their own children. VISTA will enhance our academic parent-teacher team model and develop home-based literacy resources and user guides that Hiawatha will use to share information and resources with families in order to boost students’ literacy development. The VISTA will also create resources to connect families with community-based organizations that can increase their child’s literacy skills, support their language development, and boost their academic success.
