Brainerd Public Library (VSA) - Initiative Foundation

The Brainerd Lakes Area has 465 lakes within 30 minutes of Brainerd; our community is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor and recreational activities and summer on the lake while supporting low-income children and families! Brainerd is also centrally located to all that Minnesota has to offer and Brainerd Public Library is right in the middle of it all. The Brainerd Public Library’s fundamental mission as branch of the Kitchigami Regional Library System is to connect people to knowledge and education; to be a space where the right conditions lead to creative thought and new ideas. The library provides information for all types of learners through information resources, public art displays, computer classes, cultural performances, hands-on workshops, and interactive children's early literacy areas and we would like to continue to expand the learning opportunities to include 21st Century technology and skills. The VISTA Summer Associate would research, develop and conduct Summer Reading outreach and programming directed at low-income children. By encouraging summer reading, the VSA will help provide access to free tools that can better prepare the student for success in the coming school year. The VSA will also develop a volunteer program for youth programming including Summer Reading and Afterschool Homework Help.

Member Duties : The VISTA Summer Associate will assist with summer activities for all ages of youth and perform outreach visits at Brainerd area school and playground sites where there are free activity programs for children during the summer. They will also visit locations where free summer lunch is provided to students. During these visits they will register children for the summer reading program and assist them in participation. They will also provide a literature based program and activity at each visit. VSA will also assist with summer library program activities for children and teens in the library, including organizing/recruiting teen volunteers. Statistics will be kept to count the number of additional children participating in the summer library programs at outreach sites and the number of children participating in the literacy activities. Promotion of programs, teaching classes, assessment and evaluation will be required.
