Brainerd Baxter Youth Center (VSA) - Initiative Foundation

Many youth who visit TheShop (Brainerd Baxter Youth Center) live in generational poverty and experience opportunity gaps throughout their lives. These transitional-age youth (14 – 22) are survivors in a world where such gaps have followed them their entire lives. Nearly 27% of children in Brainerd, MN are living below the poverty level. For those who struggle in school with barriers often associated with poverty, summertime has profound detrimental impacts educationally, socially and physically as support systems provided by school districts are absent. Through supporting our TarTopGarden and Bicycle Recycle, our VSA project will increase access to healthy foods and physical activity as well as create opportunities for low-income youth to gain a variety of new skills related to leadership, horticulture, and healthy eating. Our programs are designed with youth to discover hidden talents, offer opportunities to level the playing field, demonstrate personal worth to themselves and their community and establish a sense of civic pride. We empower youth to define who they want to be and mentor soft skills necessary to succeed as they journey towards maturity. Through hands on learning this project promotes team building and leadership development. Staying engaged helps brains focus and works against the summer slide experienced by students, especially at risk youth from low-income families. Come be a part of this fun and exciting work!
