College Health Corps, Inver Hills CC Student Success

Inver Hills Community College was founded in 1970 and has grown to serve almost 6,000 students each year. In fall 2014, 41.3% of new students met the federal definition for low income eligibility. This percentage has increased steadily and has risen from 17.4% in 2009. The VISTA will assist Inver Hills in addressing the work that has been started by our Poverty Committee. The overall goal of the VISTA will be to increase students’ access to and usage of health related services, wellness knowledge and health care insurance through partnership development, creation of a communications plan promoting the benefits of addressing wellness and creation of a data management system to track student usage and impact on student persistence and overall wellness. The three areas that the VISTA will address are: Develop and leverage 4 community partnerships to increase Inver Hills and its partner’s capacity of responding to underserved students basic and health related needs. Develop and implement a student communications plan to increase students understanding of the importance of addressing wellness related needs and impact on their overall health. Develop a tracking database to track student’s referral and usage of basic needs and health related services and health insurance referrals.*** This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, and food and nutrition through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development.***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.
