Indy Hunger Network/CICOA

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions is a not-for-profit agency and one of 700 Area Agencies on Aging nationwide. Established in 1973 by an amendment to the 1965 Older Americans Act and incorporated in 1974, CICOA is not a government agency, but oversees state and federal funds and private donations to provide information, advocacy and support services for older adults, people with disabilities, and family caregivers. CICOA’s mission is to empower older adults, those of any age with a disability and family caregivers to achieve the greatest possible independence, dignity and quality of life. The VISTA member placed at CICOA will work directly with the Director of Meals & More to establish a sustainable volunteer phone reassurance program. The program will ensure that older adults and those of any age with a disability who have little to no support systems receive periodic interaction with volunteers through telephone wellness checks. Wellness checks function as a safety net acting both as communication and assessment tools to capture snapshots of a beneficiary’s well being. This provides interaction an individual would not otherwise receive due to his or her lack of support systems. Playing an integral part in developing, executing and tracking the program, the VISTA member will gain significant experience and knowledge in community programming and development and volunteer management.
