Community-Based Network Initiative

Through this program, HACBED is working with a large network of partners to develop an array of financial education services and products. Current key activities within the program include: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program - The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Those who qualify can have both their state and federal tax returns completed and filed, free of charge. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Resources Match - Resources Match is an online screening and referral software application that connects low-income individuals to an array of government programs, community services and financial products. The application matches individual socio-economic profiles against eligibility criteria and utilizes a scoring engine to match client data to services in the system. Incentivized Savings Programs - Focusing primarily on youth, HACBED utilizes incentivized savings accounts to highlight the importance of budgeting and saving. HACBED helps to provide matching funds for money deposited into the accounts, but also for peripheral incentives, such as good grades or perfect attendance. For example, HACBED is currently holding an incentivized savings program at the Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (KVIBE), which also involves regular workshops focused on budgeting related topics. This program for low-income youth functions as an entry point for broader financial empowerment. The AmeriCorps VISTA applicant will assist with all of the above activities. This includes, but is not limited to, recruiting VITA volunteers, facilitating Resource Match meetings, and running financial workshops. In addition, the VISTA will help to recruit additional partners and funders to help not only expand existing activities, but add completely new ones as well.
