College Health Corps, American Indian Cancer Foundation

The American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF) mission is to eliminate cancer burdens on American Indian (AI) families through education, prevention, early detection, treatment and survivor support. We support transformational community-based interventions that engage AI communities in the discovery of cancer best practices. We believe communities possess the wisdom to discover the solutions to effectively address the challenges but often look for resources and support to do so. We strive to be a partner trusted by tribes and organizations working toward effective and sustainable cancer solutions. AI community needs have been identified by AICAF through countless community conversations, research projects, clinical system innovation partnerships and lived experiences of staff, families and friends in AI communities across the country. A key tremendous need is culturally-relevant resources and interventions to promote cancer screening and prevention. The VISTA member will work with a skilled team to develop culturally-tailored communication and health education materials to raise knowledge, awareness and promote increased access to primary/preventative services. These sustainable endeavors include toolkit development, media plans and the mobilization of a national community health network aimed at reducing American Indian cancer incidence and mortality. *** This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, and food and nutrition through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. Member Duties : This project will increase access to AICAF’s health education resources by expanding the reach of communications, media and marketing to American Indian communities, including public health messaging at community events, trainings, and presentations and online. This project will address the lack of culturally-tailored health communications resources and ensure AICAF projects are translating research, data and literature into community applications. The VISTA member will support the AICAF staff in developing communications frameworks and high-quality, culturally-tailored public health education materials that bring attention to cancer prevention and awareness across our statewide, regional and national initiatives. The VISTA member will play a key role in efforts to keep current with emerging content and research. Examples of the activities include producing website updates, social media content, fact sheets, brochures, presentations, toolkits, and campaigns with multiple components.
