We have four components that all work to make learning happen though connections with food and the community: food to share, food to grow, food to buy and food to know. The Health Commons are health focused drop-in centers in local context. The focus is being welcoming to all visitors and building relationships with all people. The Health Commons in Cedar-Riverside was founded 3 years ago. It also operates on the same principles, but the participant population in much different. Most visitors at this location are East African immigrant who are interested in educational groups such as exercise, nutrition and parenting classes. *** This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, and food and nutrition through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations.
