2016 Volunteer Iowa: CRPL Literacy Programs Coordinator

For over 60 years, the Cedar Rapids Public Library has promoted literacy initiatives. The library has a long tradition in the community, but is also on the edge of something greater. With two world-class new libraries opening in 2013, the library is a vibrant community hub and buzzing with energy and possibility. This is a dynamic time to connect the library to the community through outreach and volunteerism. You can be a part of this exciting literacy initiative and make a lasting impact on young readers in Cedar Rapids! With a new strategic plan that focuses on “Investing in Young Minds,” we are further developing our reading programs designed for K-12 students. In the summer of 2015, we launched our redesigned summer reading program and piloted a new Summer Meals outreach program - with the help of previous VISTAs. VISTA goals for 2016-2017 include: expand the 2017 summer meals outreach program to include more offsite partnerships and increase reach to youth in poverty; expand STEAM related programming; evaluate the success of the 2016 summer meals program; increase the participation and completion rates in all reading programs; develop and implement systems to more comprehensibly evaluate our reading programs, youth experience, and delivery systems; expand on the volunteer opportunities for the reading programs; and develop outreach initiatives to promote library programs and resources in schools with higher percentages of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch. The VISTA will serve as a part of the Volunteer Iowa VISTA Program. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program will have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, and fellow AmeriCorps VISTA members. Members will receive ongoing training, support, networking, and professional development opportunities.
