As part of the outreach and education team, at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the VISTA member will be vital in a complete redesign of the park’s Maritime Museum over the next couple of years. This VISTA member will support the Museum planning process by helping to convene several focus groups from communities of color to advise stakeholders in the creation of programs and exhibit design. Considering the input from these focus groups, the VISTA member will also take the lead in planning and/or supporting other staff in planning several annual public programs focused on communities of color: night or weekend programs at the Museum, Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, Black History Month programs, Latino Heritage Month, Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and spring break history camp for high schoolers of color. The VISTA member will also look for opportunities to promote National Park Service careers to students and communities of color, through career day presentations, job fairs, school assemblies, etc.

Member Duties : Work to grow existing connections with communities of color, particularly high schools, and forge new connections, to ascertain how the National Park Service may serve to advance their goals in a mutually beneficial way. Continue planning efforts surrounding the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service program and an annual week-long history excursion during spring break which leads high school students to discover little-known stories of people of color at Bay Area national parks. VISTA will help to convene several community meetings with community stakeholders within minority communities, in order to survey interests, lead brainstorming sessions, find overlap in park and organizational missions, develop collaborative public programs at the Museum, and elsewhere, in the park. VISTA will seek opportunities for park staff to attend career days at under-served middle and high schools, in order to spread awareness about careers in the National Park Service.
