AmeriCorps VISTA - CHS Oakland

The mission of Children's Home Society of California is to reach out to children and families with a range of services that ensure every child the opportunity to develop within a safe, healthy, and secure environment. CHS is currently celebrating 125 years of providing critical supports for needy children and families in California. The CHS Oakland office recently opened in December of 2014, providing a great opportunity for an ambitious, self-directed VISTA to make a huge impact in the neighborhood. The Oakland office is located in the Eastmont neighborhood, which is one of the highest need areas in Oakland and has recently seen major demographic shifts. Oakland is located across the bay from San Francisco, one of the most popular places to live and work in the nation. The rise in the cost of living threatens many low-income families and increases the need for additional supports. The VISTA will play a major role in development of the family resource center and early learning activities through collaborative relationships with other organizations. The VISTA will enhance a school-readiness workshop series by working with schools and recruiting and training volunteers. The VISTA will help to address a wide range of educational, social, and economic issues facing low-income families. The ideal candidate will have experience working in Oakland or in similar urban, high-need areas. This person has strong organizational and writing skills and is comfortable taking initiative. This person will have trained and managed volunteers and has experience with community engagement. This is an excellent opportunity for someone eager to learn essential management and program development skills and who is interested in working in the field of early childhood development or social services.
