WSC Center for Natural Lands Management Plant Technician

The Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) stewardship activities are currently divided between California and Washington. In the State of Washington, CNLM focuses on conservation of one of the rarest ecosystems in United States, the prairie and oak woodlands of the south Puget Sound region. At least 92 percent of the prairie habitat in south Puget Sound region has been converted to other land uses or destroyed. CNLM aims to protect and restore prairie and oak habitats, and support the recovery of rare or listed species. Our Washington staff serves our conservation objectives by acquiring, managing and restoring conservation lands, conducting applied restoration research projects, growing native plants and seed, and conducting outreach to partners and the public. CNLM seeks three fulltime AmeriCorps members to fill prairie restoration service opportunities with the South Sound Prairies Program in the Olympia office. These three positions include a Prairie Restoration Technician, an Avian Technician, and a Native Plant Propagation Technician. These positions are offered through and contingent on funding from the Washington Service Corps.

Member Duties : The Plant Propagation Technician is critically important to the development of native seed for restoration. Our nurseries coordinate the production of over 500,000 plant plugs and hundreds of pounds of native seed for several partner organizations, while assembling and updating production protocols for over 100 prairie plant species. The Native Plant Propagation Technician will assist our nursery team by collecting and processing native seed, as well as propagating our plants. Three quarters of his or her time will be spent at native plant nurseries; the rest of the time will be spent conducting on the ground restoration across various prairie preserves. Restoration activities include mechanical and chemical control of invasive species, monitoring key animal and plant species, wild seed collection, and planting plugs.
