17-18 Northwest Workforce Council, At-risk Youth Specialist
 
 
 
The position of At-Risk Youth Specialist aligns precisely with the Northwest Workforce Council’s mission to focus on effective strategies for serving: • Unemployed and underemployed young adults 16-24 years of age, • High school drop-outs • Secondary school students at risk of dropping out • Young adults receiving social service benefits • Pregnant/parenting youth • Youth in foster care • Youth with offender records • Youth with disabilities This position allows for meaningful collaborations with the K-12 system, youth organizations, government agencies and private businesses which strive to: A. Enhance educational attainment, retention and drop out prevention in school B. Proactively prepare youth to meet current and future demands of the region’s workforce through competency based programming that addresses business needs across industries. This includes developing youths’ soft skills and work readiness skills. C. Reengage drop outs in the education process; D. Offer opportunities for job shadows and internships to assist youth in developing career pathways. This position is contingent on funding.

Member Duties : A. Develop positive relationships with young adults, assist in career readiness and basic skill development B. Serve effectively as a team member within the collaborative partnership including: secondary schools, community based organizations, government agencies, and private businesses. C. Monitor individual youth and team progress towards project goals D. Assist in developing work based learning opportunities E. Participate in the scheduling and delivery of workshops addressing: • Introduction to WorkSource One-stop system • Interview skills and marketing strengths • Presentation skills • Resume building • Job search preparation • Planning and implementing community projects • Career and adult living planning • Soft-skills F. Introduce concepts and practices for money and credit management G. Coach youth on career exploration H. Prepare and maintain records and reports I. Be an effective team member in the Whatcom WorkSource One-stop system.
