Harvest Against Hunger - Spokane Edible Tree Project

Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) is a program of Rotary First Harvest. Based in Seattle, the HAH program acts as a gleaning and produce recovery program incubator, working with partner host sites to place AmeriCorps VISTAs across Washington State and in a national cohort. These VISTA members serve as gleaning coordinators, building localized, sustainable produce recovery programs that grow connections between farmers and food banks to increase the amount of fresh nutritious produce available to people experiencing food insecurity. In Spokane, Washington, the Harvest Against Hunger project is located at the Spokane Edible Tree Project (SETP). Spokane Edible Tree Project (SETP) envisions a beautiful thriving urban area where the community is competent in the essentials of fruit and nut tree maintenance, is effectively preserving the bounty of these local nourishing sources and is promoting community food security. SETP maps all the fruit and nut trees in the Spokane area. The Harvest VISTA will work to strengthen volunteer coordination to go out and harvest the produce when it is ripe! Gleaned fruit is donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, Northwest Harvest, and other regional partners in the hunger relief system. Additionally, the Harvest VISTA will build the capacity of the SETP in a number of ways. Tree scouts work in their own neighborhoods to register productive and underutilized fruit trees! This is a fun opportunity to serve as a vital liaison between SETP and fruit tree owners. Harvesting parties bring people together to pick fruit that might otherwise go to waste, and make it available to people in need. These events are a fun and easy way to get involved with the SETP. Harvest Leaders co-lead gleaning mobs along with another volunteer.

Member Duties : The VISTA will strengthen and improve program capacity for produce recovery, specifically fruit tree gleaning. As part of this plan, the Harvest VISTA will actively recruit program participants and develop an entirely new project model in a three-pronged approach: Develop a recruitment plan with host site to deliver a sustainable approach for volunteer management; Develop a grower outreach plan to introduce gleaning program; Develop a plan to partner with other local and regional hunger relief efforts. Within this three-pronged approach, the Harvest VISTA will also track gleaning and volunteer data, and coordinate communication with produce recovery partners. The VISTA will implement gleaning coordination and oversee program logistics. The VISTA will also develop a sustainability plan for the gleaning program.
