Literacy Mid-South VISTA Project (Reading)

The Literacy Mid-South VISTA Project seeks to build the capacity of after-school programs to implement evidence driven reading programming for elementary school students. With VISTA member support, project host sites will work to develop their existing programming into robust and effective reading programs. Our aim is to increase reading scores in Shelby County Schools to 90% by 2025. Literacy Mid-South will serve as an intermediary VISTA site for our after-school programs.

Member Duties : Our AmeriCorps VISTA members will implement procedures and build capacity for the after-school literacy programs in place at our network sub-sites. The focus of this literacy programming will be on kindergarten through the fifth grade. Many of these sites currently have a limited capacity for updating their literacy programming and need help recruiting and training volunteers, and engaging with parents in the community. The VISTA will need to be able to work with program schedules and implement the most time-effective program. The VISTA will be charged with making sure there is an evaluation system in place and that all staff and volunteers know how to use it. The VISTA will communicate with Literacy Mid-south and the sub-site to build processes for data and resource sharing.
