Volunteer Houston VISTA members will expand their host sites’ organizational capacity to effectively engage volunteers and expand services. Members will enable our partners to build lasting volunteer infrastructure by creating the processes and tools needed to effectively access and utilize valuable volunteer program resources. At the same time, more opportunities will be created for community volunteers to engage in meaningful service to under-resourced communities to support efforts to alleviate poverty in Greater Houston. This member will work to improve communications for Adults - English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Citizenship and GED Distance Learning Classes. Youth - Kindergarten Readiness and Third Grade Reading Proficiency for Harris County Public Library.

Member Duties : The VISTA will devise a literacy awareness campaign with the Adult & Youth Literacy Services Specialists to engage corporate & other sponsors to support HCPL Literacy services by developing a communication plan to gain sponsors & funding to support & increase the literacy program & utilize social media & press releases. The VISTA will assist the Adult and Youth Literacy Specialists in preparing volunteers across Harris County to tutor library patrons who are in need of literacy services & construct a volunteer recognition program that will acknowledge volunteer commitment on an ongoing basis as well as honor HCPL Literacy volunteers. The VISTA will encourage & support Community partnership developments in areas that are not close to an HCPL library location.
